Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and its relationship with the duration of using smart phones and the postures adopted among the students of Tehran University. For this purpose, in a cross-sectional study, 664 students aged 18 to 40 years were selected and the duration of mobile phone use was recorded. Then, the presence and intensity of upper limb musculoskeletal pain was measured by Nordic questionnaire and numerical rating scale (NRS). Also, the physical condition of students while using mobile phones was investigated. The results showed that there is a significant relationship between the duration of mobile phone use and musculoskeletal pain in all the studied areas in the last week and last 12 months. The results related to the musculoskeletal pain of the upper limbs and trunk and the postures adopted by the students showed that only in the upper back, neck and waist and upper back in the last 12 months, and also in the neck and upper back in the last 12 months, which prevented daily work and Also, there is a significant relationship between neck, wrist and back problems in the last week with the adopted body position. Considering the relationship between the musculoskeletal pain of students with the duration and their physical condition in using a smart mobile phone, it is necessary to provide the enough information to students regarding the causes of musculoskeletal pain, such as the duration and the proper physical posture while using it.
