Abstract

This study was conducted with the aim of analyzing the coordination of the lower limb joints in forward lunge, with and without T-rays. By using an eight-camera motion analysis system, kinematic data related to the performance of three different variations of forward lunge (including conventional forward lunge, forward lunge by placing hands or foot inside the TRX rope) by 22 active female students were collected. MATLAB software was used for data processing and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test at a significance level of P < 0.05 was used for statistical comparison. The results showed that forward lunge, as a knee-dominant and closed kinetic chain exercise, is the result of in-phase movement of the lower limb joints. Performing lunges with feet inside the TRX rope increases hip involvement and decreases ankle involvement. On the other hand, performing lunges with the TRX rope in hand, increases ankle involvement and decreases hip involvement. According to the obtained results, the hypothesis of a synergistic effect between hip and ankle joints was confirmed. Due to the increased variability of coordination in the ascending phase of the movement cycle, it is suggested that people with balance problems or muscle weakness stand next to a support during performing the lunge and get help from the support if they slip or fall.
