Does the strength and ROM of patients with tennis elbow change after 8 sessions of Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)?

Abstract
The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) on strength and range of motion (ROM) of the elbow and wrist in patients with tennis elbow. For this purpose, 44 patients with tennis elbow were selected purposefully and available and were randomly divided into two experimental and control groups. Patients in the control group received Corticosteroid injections, 10 sessions of physical therapy and daily use of tennis elbow splint, while the patients in the experimental group received IASTM for 10 minutes, 2 sessions per week for 4 weeks, in addition to receiving the treatments of the control group. Grip strength (dynamometer) and ROM (goniometer) were measured before and after 4 weeks. The data were analyzed using the dependent t statistical method and analysis of variance tests (P<0.05). The findings of the research showed that in the experimental group, all the variables had a significant improvement (P<0.05); But in the control group, only the grip strength had a significant improvement (P<0.05). Also, a significant difference was observed between the two experimental and control groups in grip strength, ROM of elbow flexion, elbow extension and wrist extension (P<0.05). However, no significant difference was observed between the two experimental and control groups in the ROM of wrist flexion (P>0.05). Considering the improvement of grip strength and range of motion, it is suggested that IASTM is used for this group of patients along with common interventions for the treatment of tennis elbow.
